6 - 12 Months Your child begins a fascinating journey of development. During this period your child develops motor skills and hand-eye coordination by picking up and putting down toys. Perception is stimulated when your child can feel the difference between different types of surfaces and textures. |

1 year - 2 years Your young child now begins to build on skills already acquired, particularly motor skills and perception. Children learn to pick up items, and love to hand you a toy and be given it back again. As their perception improves, they can recognise their own things and many develop an interest in music. |

3 years - 5 years Rate of development increases as your child explores the world around them. Motor skills improve, along with essential hand-eye coordination. Children can keep their balance when they bend down to pick up a toy from the floor. Improved perception enables them to understand that even though a ball has rolled under the sofa, it is still there. |

6+ years Your child is now entering a particularly exciting stage. Play becomes richer, and they show the first signs of wanting to play with others - they are learning social behaviour. Painting with a brush and staying inside the lines challenges for precision motor skills and many children start building and constructing things during play. |
