The 2004 BRIO Scholarship
Ph. Doctor Jean-Pierre Rossie from the State University of Ghent, Belgium, and presently active at SITREC, Stockholm International Toy Research Centre, has been appointed as the receiver of the BRIO-Prize for 2004.
Jean-Pierre Rossie is awarded the BRIO-Prize with references to his perseverance and consistency to show us - based on numerous years of anthropological studies - how important it is that early education begin with reference to the children's own experience and that the children's ancient, local toy creations played with throughout long times in different cultures are worthy of scientific research in order to understand cultural backgrounds.
Jean-Pierre Rossie completed his doctoral theses in 1973 in the work "Child and Society" and he has over the years published numerous works - some in cooperation with UNESCO - from "Games and Toys" (1984), "Childrens Play" (1993) and up to "Toys, Play, Culture and Society - an Anthropological Approach with References to North Africa and the Saharas" to be published at SITREC in 2005.
Jean-Pierre Rossie has also in cooperation with various museums prepared exhibitions, for example the Toy Museum in Mechelen, Belgium, Musée de l'Homme in Paris and Musée International des Arts Modestes in Sète, France.
The BRIO Prize is a yearly event since 1992, when the Lennart Ivarsson Scholarship Foundation awards a prominent academic toy researcher or an organisation that contributes within the field of children's play and development. This year's award is EURO 3 000 and a prestigious BRIO diploma.
